Indiana is considered a safe red state. Bush won Indiana 57% to Gore's 41% in 2000. In a poll last month, Bush led Kerry 54 to 33. (Indianapolis Star/WHIR May 13-19).

Adding Bayh, Kerry takes the lead in Indiana (Bayh is an incredibly popular Senator and former governor). The negatives for Bayh are: 1) he might be a little too conservative for the Democratic base (I don't think this matters in this election), 2) he voted for some of Bush's tax cuts, 3) he is a sitting Democratic senator in a Republican state (so Kerry would lose one vote in the Senate).
