When it comes to the intelligence of public figures we are always most impressed by the good speakers, and tend to denigrate the poor speakers. This is natural because usually all we see of their public personna is their ability to speak. Accordingly people like Obama and Kennedy are presumed to be very intelligent, when in fact they may just have a gift for speaking.

In my experience, I have known many poor speakers who are very intelligent, if you take the time to get to know them and many great speakers who are empty suits.
