The company particularly touted the Dolby AC-3 decoder as a technological breakthrough. Samsung merged a digital
signal processor (DSP) with a static random access memory (SRAM) to develop the digital sound chip.

According to the company, the chip is designed to be usable for DVD, multimedia PC and digital audio equipment only
with software reprogramming.

Samsung said its new chip will be able to replace products from such vendors as Texas Instruments and SGS-Thomson
in the domestic market.
