>>It is Palin that they are attacking, not what happened during troopergate.<<

That's mostly true. Sarah was an insurgent maverick Republican who had acquired many bitter enemies in the Republican party establishment. Her governing coalition was mostly Democrats plus some moderate Republicans. They partied on happily together to raise oil tax etc. Then it all fell apart...

First, Palin fired popular Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. He was the former Anchorage Police Chief and current head of the State Trooeprs, so his firing upset all those Democrat-leaning, union-dues-paying cops. Plus he's an Alaska Native, so that upset another important Democrat-leaning constituency. Then Andrew Halcro (a bitter Republican arch-nemesis of Palin), broke the story on his blog that Palin had pressured Monegan to fire Trooper Wooten. Palin must have fired Monegan because he wouldn't fire Wooten! So all of Palin's previous legislative enemies joined with the newly upset folks to launch the legislative investigation.

Second, Palin had the gall to accept McCain's VP nomination. That solidified the Democrat opposition against her, together with the existing Republican opposition.

With these two actions, she totally blew up her coalition in the legislature. It's been constant feuding between her and the legislature ever since. I see multiple reasons why she quit...

1) Continuous ethics complaints and foi requests.
2) A non-cooperative legislature.
3) Loss of personal popularity in Alaska.
4) Endless scorn from the media and blogosphere.

I'd quit and go fishing too. ;)
