I think you are correct about the populist movement and the shift on issues.
Did you read Friedman's The World is Flat? I struggled through the tech parts, but what I understood I completely agree with- I see no way we can successfully take a protectionist or isolationist route longterm. (Karen and I have had a We Love Tom fanclub for several years.)

WHen I mention the strong conservative element, I am thinking of the many I know who over the past several years have seen the Republican party reflect them less and less. They dislike the evangelical emphasis and the fiscal profligacy, and they believe the war has been mishandled, but they still hold traditional values.
Of course you are correct about how it feels living in Dallas, where our choir sang "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" as a closing benediction at the fall concert.
