Competition for gear rises with RDRAM output

Oct. 01, 1999 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) --
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - As Korean chip makers gear up for volume
production of Rambus DRAMs, competition is building among foreign and
domestic suppliers of production equipment.

Samsung Electronics, Hyun-dai Semiconductor and Hyundai Micro
Electronics are expanding their fabs to begin volume production of 128-
and 144-Mbit RDRAMs. As they do, domestic orders for semiconductor
manufacturing equipment are gradually increasing, industry watchers
said. Samsung will be supplied by Schlumberger with high-speed test
equipment and other gear for its RDRAM production line.

Overseas suppliers of test and related handling equipment are
expected to receive a flood of orders from RDRAM makers later this
year. Such companies as Teradyne, Schlumberger, Hewlett-Packard and
Advantest are marketing high-speed test equipment for emerging Rambus
DRAMs.

Korean assembly equipment companies such as Mirae Corp. are also
attacking the market for Rambus in-line memory modules.
