Allete Inc., the Duluth-based parent company of Minnesota Power and other operations, said Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire Enventis Inc., a Plymouth-based provider of data-network systems. Terms weren't disclosed.
Enventis, founded in 1999, has about 24 employees. It builds and maintains voice, video and data networks in the Twin Cities. Allete spokesman Eric Olson said Enventis, a privately owned company, does not disclose financial data. He also said the company does not anticipate layoffs because of the acquisition.
Allete said Enventis will operate as a subsidiary of its MP Telecom unit, which provides business-to-business telecommunications networks in the Upper Midwest. MP Telecom has built fiber-optic networks throughout much of Minnesota and is building a ring around the Twin Cities, said Walt Prahl, the unit's CEO. It also operates in Wisconsin and other states, and plans to continue expanding its own system, he said.
