The average car lasts 160,000 miles. The average
owner doesn't keep the car 160,000 miles. Although
you could keep your car that long (and I tend to
keep cars until they literally die) most people get
tired of the inconvenience, uncertainty and repair
costs that come with running a real old car. With
computers something similar is true. It's just hard
to deal with the internet with a 286 (or windows or
multimedia or ....) Features and conveniences keep
popping up on new pcs that can't be supported without
at all or without a lot of effort. Sooner or later
you wind up with more of a pc. My personal estimate
is that I will need a new home pc every three years.
The old one will still be going but it won't support
3d graphics or videophones or whatever. Every pc
sold for home use spurs the future sale of a replacement
pc. It's not that the old pc stopped working. It's that
the old pc will probably be feature poor and folks like
those features. There are still people who are running their
286 with a 123 spreadsheet and they are perfectly happy.
But they are a small minority (like those who hold a car until
it breathes its last breath).
