THE WHITEBOARD
OBAMA IN WARREN, MICH. -- Obama acknowledges a list of elected officials in attendance: Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Sen. Debbie Stabenow and potential gubernatorial candidates Lt. Gov. John Cherry and state House Speaker Andy Dillon. Also mentioning Carl and Sandy Levin, not in attendance, and Detroit's new mayor, Dave Bing. (3:39 p.m.)
Obama starts with praise for Macomb Community College and its president, whom he acknowledges. "This is a place where people of all ages and all backgrounds...can take a chance on a brighter future for themselves and their families."
Acknowledging that Michigan has been hit hard by the recession, Obama tells the audience he feels their pain: "You know that as difficult as the financial struggle can be, the sense of loss is about more than a paycheck. We define ourselves by the work we do. It’s a source of pride." (3:44 p.m.)
CONFRONTATIONAL: Obama deviates from the script to go after his critics. "I love those folks who helped get us in this mess and now say, 'This is Obama's economy.' That's fine. Give it to me...My job is to solve problems. Not to stand on the sidelines and carp and gripe." (3:45 p.m.)
Recycling a familiar message, POTUS says he's not just trying to bounce back from the recession, but lay the groundwork for future prosperity. Notes GM and Chrysler emerging from bankruptcy and segues to health care and energy. The usual script. (3:50 p.m.)
