There's nothing miraculous in believing in consciousness as an emergent phenomena just as we have the fossil record of emergent adaptive physical structutres. There is a belief some have that the transition from intelligence to consciousness needs the acquisition of a language. It may be enough for you to believe that a "God" created a Woman from a man's rib & the Man from dust and they emerged fully formed vocal chords & vocabulary completely intact , speaking in some magic tounge automatically(?) . This seems stunningly simple headed & incredible to believe , if this is what you wish to teach its just not going to fly anymore except out on the fringe, but maybe you think so??
