In 2004. George Nethercutt......the final vote was 55% vs 43%.

Did he or she have any hope of winning against the incumbent?

He was a well known Republican and had been in the House of Rep. during the 1990s. The fact that he did so poorly against her in a presidential election year when the president won handily suggests she's pretty popular. She did as well as Cantwell did this year.

Congressional term limits is the obvious solution.

I agree. I plan to give that letter to her opponent in 2010 when she runs again.
