The 20cm tsunami was a concern because Global Warming could cause something like that over the next century and getting that much in one go was a worry. People at the beach would have had to move to higher ground to survive. Fortunately, being the middle of winter, there were few at the beach. They were able to get another 20cm higher in time to avoid drowning.

There is more concern about a 20 metre tsunami or 200 metre tsunami when a bolide splashes into the Pacific Ocean or explodes over it like the Tunguska impact.

A 200 metre wave in seconds seems more dangerous than a half metre rise over 100 years which shouldn't catch many people unaware.

The next Lake Taupo eruption should make the news there too. There is a city, Taupo, which has been built right there inside the caldera. Call me a wild and crazy panic merchant, but that seems insane. There are perfectly good places all over the country [100 metres above sea level] where people can build cities. Living inside an active volcano is asking for trouble.
