Sun Microsystems Introduces 'Dot-Com Your Legacy Desktop' Program Innovative Sun
Ray (TM) Systems Upgrade Corporate Terminal Desktops to Browser-Based Internet
World While Maintaining the Benefits of Central Administration

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 2, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sun Microsystems,
Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today an aggressive program to help small to large
enterprises upgrade from a traditional terminal environment to a Web-based,
multimedia environment powered by Sun Ray (TM) 1 enterprise appliances and a Sun
(TM) server. Sun Ray systems give companies the advantages of a graphical user
interface and Internet functionality such as browsing, multimedia and streaming
audio, while retaining access to their existing terminal applications, and the
ease of maintenance and central administration of the terminal model.

Called "Dot-Com Your Legacy Desktop," the program offers a trade-in allowance to
reduce acquisition costs for customers who replace legacy X-terminals, IBM 3270
mainframe terminals, IBM 5250 AS/400 terminals and VT terminals with Sun Ray
systems and Sun Enterprise (TM) servers. In addition, PCs and workstations
qualify for the trade-in allowance.

"Despite the massive deployment of networked PCs over the past 15 years, many
traditional applications are still running on the terminal model," said Gene
Banman, vice president and general manager, Information Appliances for Sun,
"Users of legacy terminals now have the opportunity to leapfrog the now mature
PC model to the new Internet information appliance model. The program we are
announcing today makes the transition to the new model easier than ever before."

The next-generation Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliance is a stateless system that
never needs upgrading, requires no client administration and reduces operating
costs. By consolidating resources onto a Sun Enterprise server, users get server
performance on their desktops.

The Sun Ray systems replacement solution includes a fully configured Sun
Enterprise 250 or Sun Enterprise 450 Server, Ethernet card and connections, and
Sun Ray Enterprise appliances based on the number of legacy systems being
replaced. Pickup and disposal of legacy systems into to an environmentally
controlled disposal facility are also available as part of the replacement
program. This offer expires on Sept. 30, 2000.

The Sun Ray appliance, with its Hot Desk technology, is an easy-to use, low-cost
networked device. Unlike desktop computers that require an operating system and
applications running locally on the desktop, the Sun Ray systems allow users
instant access to the existing Solaris Operating Environment, Java technology,
Windows NT or multimedia applications, and information resources from anywhere
on the network. The Sun Ray systems provide users with an instant, constant,
simple and rich user experience, plus performance that is dependent on powerful,
reliable Sun Enterprise servers and storage, instead of desktop, hard drives,
processors and operating systems. For more information about the Sun Ray
enterprise appliance, please visit sun.com.
