Somebody of Rezai's stature doesn't speak out publicly like this unless he really does fear the government's collapse.

They have lost Ayatollah Montazeri, who never supported Khamenei but didn't issue fatwas against him before, and the scholars of Qom. There are many anecdotes coming out of Iran of conservative religious followers of Ayatollah Khomenei saying, if this regime has become a military dictatorship, it deserves to fall. The structure of the Islamic Republic depended on "the Supreme Guide" acting as a mediator but now Khamenei is in bed with Ahmedinejad and seen to be so.

How can the Islamic Republic lose religious legitimacy and yet continue, that's the question.

Maybe we'll see a schism, with Ahmedinejad bringing out Ayatollah Yazdi to issue counter-fatwas.
