I hadn't thought of it. I've heard El Presidente practically owns an entire state.

Mr. Menem may, however, escape the spotlight should the recession extend much longer. I read not long ago about a growing discontent with the recent and considerable wealth garnered by the captains of Argentine industry; who are now, some say, more a target of the dissatisfied than the politicos.

Also, there was a lengthy article in last week's Buenos Aires Herald (tried to recover it, but it's gone) about at least one columnist's fear of the give-aways that are certain to be used to gain favor with voters in this election year. Attempts to win voters during the run-up, he feels, could put quite a bit of federal money down the drain, clockwise. <g>
