NY Fed's Manufacturing Survey Declines Sharply In April

Tuesday April 15, 8:16 am ET

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Manufacturing activity in the New York Federal Reserve district deteriorated markedly in April, after moving into negative territory in March.

The New York Fed said Tuesday in its Empire State Manufacturing Survey that its general business conditions index fell to -20.37 in April from a revised - 2.77 in March, which had been originally reported as -2.5.

The April level for the general business conditions index was the lowest level since October 2001, just after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. The index only began to be compiled in July 2001, but has gained market attention as a precursor of the Philadelphia Fed's manufacturing index (due to be released at noon EDT (1600 GMT) Thursday), which is itself seen as a proxy for the Institute for Supply Management's national survey.

The new orders component fell to -15.93 in April from a reading of -4.67 in March, while shipments fell to -7.26 from -5.40.

The number of employees component weakened further to a reading of -10.99 in April from -6.67 in March. Moreover, the average workweek slipped to a reading of -17.98 from -15.42 in the prior month.

While the current-conditions index deteriorated in April, the index measuring expectations six months from now increased to a reading of 37.92 from 30.22 in March.

Among the few economists who forecast this index, the median expectation of five economists was for a reading of -5.0.
