"Suppose the Kurds, with US support, attempt to secede from Iraq and declare their own nation."

If that were to occur, the US would have to occupy New Kurdistan to control the borders and ensure that there wasn't any cross-border attacks into Syria, Turkey and Iran. The safety of the Turkmen in NK would have to be guaranteed, something Turkey is very concerned about. Realize that both Turkey and Iran were massing hundreds of thousands of troops on the Iraqi border fairly recently. And making the kind of noises that countries make when they are readying an invasion. Haven't seen anything recently, so I don't know current status.

This is something that would require a lot of negotiation and planning. Negotiation and planning that is noticeable by its absence at this point in time.
