One "ultimate" example of that is Key West, Florida. The cost of housing is outrageous, you probably can't rent a closet for less than $2500 a month. At the same time it's a tourist destination that requires lots and lots of service workers... and it's an island so it ain't like you can commute from the 'burbs.
