Why did people feel it necessary to refute Colson's opinion in Westi's piece in the first place?

Because for some reason Colson tried to refute their opinion. They thought the argument was weak and so they responded.

Its more likely that someone who is solidly against supernatural explanations will rouse themselves to protest the claim that only supernatural explanations are reasonable, but you don't have to be solidly against supernatural explanations in order to reasonably raise and objection to Colson's argument.

Also just because someone personally might be against supernatural explanations, doesn't make their argument against Colson's point wrong or unreasonable or biased. (Note the distinction between the person possibly being biased and the argument being biased).
