The SentieM product announcement is representative of a broader trend in next generation wireless networks that is being made part of 802.16m/.16j and also LTE. In short, wireless (and wired) networks and computer environments are becoming 'smart distributed networks'. This has a great impact on wireless networks that benefit from high local bandwidth and ability to reuse spectrum. The MIMO-AAS capability provides high local bandwidth and more usable range. When combined with adaptable power control, and distributed network management capability, the network can provide self-configuration and self-healing capabilities.

The result is that although part of a complex, managed network, remote and mobile stations can be easily deployed and changed, including by end users similar to Wi-Fi. WiMAX networks are much more capable than Wi-Fi in their ability to use part of the spectrum for back haul and to be used in MESH, aggregated, extended, in-building and tiered network architectures without taking a performance hit typical of contention based Wi-Fi MESH. The WiMAX network is much smarter, more flexible and scalable and, of course, capable of longer range than a WiFi network.
I call this SDWN, the Smart Distributed Wireless Broadband Network.
