EETimes reports the co saw its mkt share in the first quarter rise by more than 1 percentage point from from 27.9 to 29%. The co shipped nearly 29.5 mln drives in the first quarter, maintaining its stronghold in the enterprise computing mkt with a greater than 50% mkt share. Number-two HDD supplier Western Digital Corp. (WDC) also gained ground, increasing its mkt share from 17.5 to 18.5% sequentially. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies maintained its number-three ranking, but saw its mkt share decline sequentially to 14.4% from 16.2% the fourth quarter of 2005. According to iSuppli senior storage analyst Krishna Chander, global HDD shipments reached 101.7 mln units the first quarter of 2006, up 16.5% from 87.3 mln units during the same period of 2005. iSuppli had predicted growth of 15.4%, Chander noted. Early signs indicate that the second quarter experienced its normal seasonal low. However, with shipments exceeding expectations the first quarter, prospects for the HDD industry in 2006 appear to be positive, iSuppli noted.
