Computer <> PC. One of the depressing things about the history
of PC's is to see Santayana proven right time after time. Altair shipped the machine that gave Bill Gates his start, but it was essentially unusable, except as a toy. It was a kit and not very well engineered; I'd guess the majority of the kits sold never really worked at all. It had an 8080, 4k memory, and front panel switchs as its default i/o device. Bill gets credit for actually having the patience to program such a thing.

There is no doubt that IBM blew it big on PC's, mostly by giving
the keys to the kingdom to Mr. Bill. This is not to say that
the Microsoft empire was predestined from the start; Bill knew
what he was doing, too. But if Gary Kildare hadn't wanted to
go flying... I'm really going to stop now. -Dan.
