Again, as you point out, these are questions that can not be answered directly.

If as in Amazon's case you could show a profit today but that might mean losing the number one position and leadership in a market with incredible prospects - would you do it.

MSFT and CSCO make money now, they could declare quarterly dividends but they don't. They say that they need to reinvest in the company, to make acquisitions. The change today is that these internet companies go public before they are profitable. Also consider that the Networkers, Telecos, Computer and Software companies that went before laid down the tracks, almost like the old railroads.

The internet stocks are almost like the little towns that emerged. Some will go boom and some will go bust. It is either make a name and maintain the lead or become a marginal player/disappear.

To me, AMAZON really isn't a retailer as some try to paint it. AMZN is really a software company that sells books. By analogy DELL can also be considered a software company that sells computers. Both of these companies have "internal models" that are difficult to imitate. In large part it is customized-company specific software that gives these companies an advantage. You just cannot go into a store and say I want the AMZN or DELL package.

I really don't have the answer, if I did I would be rich but as I try and answer why - the ideas listed above among others are stewing in my mind.
