Rescue Boot CD's

From Plextor documentation at Multiwave site
12.13.4.10

Begin quoted material

Plextor's new PlexWriter 4/12 sets the industry standard for CD Recorders. Writing at 4X and reading at up to 12X, PlexWriter4/12 is two drives for the price of one. With read performance rivaling many CD-ROM drives, PlexWriter 4/12 is a logical upgrade from your current CD-ROM drive. The unique loading mechanism offers the durability of a caddy loading system with the convenience of a tray. Kitted versions include Pre-mastering software; Direct CD, which allows amazing drag and drop simplicity, so you can use PlexWriter 4/12 like a floppy drive with over 650 megabytes of storage capacity; and CD-ResQ, which allows you to make a bootable, mirror image of your hard drive for easy restoration of crashed systems. Superior media recognition circuitry adjusts laser power for optimum performance ensuring a flawless recording every time.

I have been having one heck of a time getting my Ricoh 2601 CDRW working properly.

I loaded Adaptec Easy CD Creator in Win95. The obligatory boot gave me a blue screen and a harddrive access error, I rebooted and had problems with Win95. I booted from the KOT and used Drive Image to restore a working Win95 installation.

I then tried loading ECDC in Win98. It loaded and executed without a problem. I made twelve coasters and two successful burns. The process goes almost to completion. The TOC (Table of Contents) is written at the end of the process. Most of the time the procedure fails while writing the table of contents.

error message

TO100: I/O error (03/08/00)- I/O error communication error
T7728: TrackWriter warning-operation continues

I have tried the drive on the Adaptec AHA 2940U2W controller and on an Adaptec 2920 controller...same result

I downloaded and flashed the Ricoh 6201S latest drive bios ver 2.4. I then tried the process again in Win98. This time Adaptec ECDC software acted up. I booted from KOT and used Drive Image to restore the Win98 installation. This time Adaptec ECDC froze the computer during the software installation requiring another restoration.

Failures in two OSes, with two different controller cards, two different software packages and two drive bioses is not my idea of a user friendly media. JMHO
