So perhaps his crime was making statements rather than opinions. I guess ML ond others get away with it because their buy/sell is only an opinion. It seems like the weight behind their opinion should mean that these firms should not be able to make buys or sells counter to their buy/sell rating. I think it would be very enlightening to many to see records of how these big firms act on their own advice.
