Actually, they have measured these cycles as far back as 800 thousand years. The CO2 levels have always been within 3 sigma of the mean, which means that 99% of the time they have fallen within a defined range. As CO2 levels increase, the earth warmed. Then the earth biosystem absorbed the CO2 and the earth cooled. Thus, predictable cycles developed that were well within the tolerance ranges of most species inhabiting the earth.

In the last 50 years, something changed. First, the CO2 levels exceeded the upper limit (mean plus 3 sigma) and has stayed above that upper limit and continue to accelerate upwards. Second, the rate of acceleration in CO2 levels has been faster than any time in the last 800 thousand years.

Statisticians and folks who use the scientific method will tell you that this means the last 50 years of data do not represent a one time event (or outlier), but the sustained nature above the upper limit means that a systemic change has occurred. Most reputable scientists not funded by oil companies will tell you that the systemic change has been human industrialization and the increased use of fossil fuels in the last 50-100 years.

Climatologists who now have very sophisticated climate models using the world's most powerful super computers, say that the world's warming is very closely following their forecasts based on the increases in CO2 levels they have been modeling on.

Now there are only a handful of people around the world that believe that global warming is not caused by CO2 levels. Those people can be categorized into two main buckets: 1) people who are ignorant of the immense body of evidence that global warming is real and ignorant of the scientific method used to come to this conclusion and 2) people who are in the employ of fossil fuel suppliers such as oil companies who are essentially bribed to contradict what most reputable scientists have concluded.
