I don't see what AOL would really gain in buying a freeware distributor.

That's because you're thinking of Linux as a desktop OS. Think AOL Set-top Box running Linux, and all will be clear. Think AOL wireless PDAs/cellphones running Linux.

AOL is in trial runs with LBRT to market a UNIX-based set-top box. At one point Boca Research was in on that, but I'm not sure if they are any longer. This is a major competitor to Ultimate TV and Microsoft's whole Own-Everything-Everywhere strategy.
