I'm not sure I understand your question. Applications
aren't compiled to run in the FreeBSD kernel. They
all run, by definition, in user space.

I had all kinds of problems with Netscape failing on
FreeBSD 2.2.x (as I remember there were protection
faults & a variety of problems caused by memory leaks),
but with the upgrade to FreeBSD 3.4,
most of the problems have gone away. I don't run any
specific java applications so I can't speak to that.
