Re: Penetration

There are many electronic products that have reached 90% penetration.

<<No way PC penetrate 90% US population, until you can't do anything without it. Now we're only in the "you can do thing better with it" mode.>>

The B&W TV became ubiquitous because it added video to existing radio broadcasts. The color TV improved the picture quality of the B&W TV. The VCR allowed you to watch your TV programs whenever you wanted to watch, and without commercial interruptions. The video game added interactive entertainment to the TV. The high-fidelity solid-state stereo replaced it's predecessors because the sound quality is superior, and the music CD player replaced the LP for the same reason.

Intel has ignored the high-volume low-end markets worth billions of dollars. It's easy to shoot down an unproven technology like the NC, but there are proven markets that the company could address profitably.

The x86 market is mature and Intel has hit a wall. That's the reason the P6 was named the "Pentium Pro", rather than the "Hexium". It executes 16-bit Win95 apps slightly slower than a Pentium, and 32-bit apps marginally better.

Intel needs to create new markets. The quad-PPro server is a great product, but it's not enough to make up for the margin pressure the company will experience in 1997 in the main mature desktop CPU business.
