Before we ask about sales, we should ask when broadcasters expect to transmit programs with the encoding. As a consumer, it only makes sense to purchase a set top decoder when there is a signal to decode, right? That is the timeframe when sales quantities begin to reflect the market demand of the technology and reasonable sales projections can be analyzed and discussed by interested parties.

In an extreme case, hopefully no North Americans purchased HDTVs from Japan when they first appeared years ago in anticipation of the superior image quality. After several years, those HDTV owners are still waiting for the enhanced broadcast signal.
