David - of course Microsoft is going after Oracle - they are the top 2 software companies in the world and microsoft has no choice but to chase the dominant market leader in enterprise computing - Oracle - the fact that they compete has always been the case. What has happened though is that MSFT finally has a operating system that is not a lauging stock in the corporate server world - but it still has only limited applications - it is a big threat to Novell and has for many practical purposes killed them and is a threat to the OS vendors who make midrange and workgroup NOS's.

Since Oracle doesnt make Operating Systems - NT on the surface is not a threat at all to Oracle. However - Microsoft is using NT as a trojan horse to sneak other products such as sql*server, email, webserver and sna gateway products into corporate clients - much like they bundle office with win95 locking out lotus and Corel perfectoffice - by being one vendor they give the illusion of tight integration with the OS and ease of purchase and maintenance.

NT will take some low end share but there is absolutely no reason to believe that Oracle will not have a dominant share on NT as it does on Unix. Microsoft does not have the technology or infrastructure to run the banks, utilities, distributed networks of the major corporations and even nuclear power stations which currently use Oracle. The Unix/Enterprise world is comprised of vendors with many times the revenue of Microsoft and will give msft the competition it has never had on the desktop.
