the people with the white coats will arrive soon (i placed a call), hold on, we on this thread will support you until they arrive. i believe the following should put you in the abyss.
Re: Ascend + IBM 7845: Here's how I did it ...
Michael Loceff (loceff@netcom.com) wrote: : I know every combination of NT1's, routers and CO switches requires : its own thought process, but here's how I (finally) got the Pipe-50 : and Roadrunner to cooperate:
: I have a Pac Bell switch of type 5ESS out of Sunnyvale. Since : I want an occasional analog call out of the 7845, I had to get : 2 SPIDS and 2 Directory numbers.
Added by Hubert Daugherty I am working against a Southwestern Bell 5ESS and SW Bell has established a tarrif in which no more than 2 SPID's are issued against a single BRI line. Sad but true. And I, like Michael, had a lot of trouble getting the line to work with both a Pipeline 50 and an IBM 7845 connected. My experience in getting things to work are slightly different and may be of use to others in Soutwestern Bell land. I am inserting my comments into the very useful document provided by Michael Loceff in the hope that a recipe can speed others along.
: Here's the breakdown:
: Pac Bell: : 1) 2 numbers and SPIDS : 2) Each with voice/data : 3) End one additional call appearance. : 4) Both set to C terminal type (the 7845 wants C, the : Ascend prefers A or B, but it accepts C, : so for symmetry, I have C on both).
: Ascend: : 1) Point-Point NOT NOT NOT Multi-point. : 2) Give it either number as it's one and only (A) number. : 3) Since you are doint point-point from the Ascend's POV : there are no SPID questions to answer.
Added by Hubert Daugherty 4) After bringing up the Ascend in Point-to-Point, I couldn't make an outgoing call. This is what I expected, because it WAS a multi-point line and all devices on a multi-point need an SPID. However, -=THIS IS IMPORTANT!!=-, the ATTEMPT to place a call apparently allowed the 5ESS switch to identify a second device on the ISDN line because NOW, when I told the Ascend P50 to go into multi-point mode, the line status indicatator came up saying "M" in the display, not "D" as it had in all previous attempts. SUCESS!!!! 5) I set the two phone numbers and the two SPID numbers to the same value on the Ascend P50.
: IBM 7845 : 1) Program it using the other phone number (*98 ... #) and its : corresponding SPID (*99 ... #). : 2) For my area I had to speficy the 5ESS-Custom switch type : (*97 5 #) : 3) You can turn on extended mode and leave it on (*#9)
Added by Hubert Daugherty 3) IS IMPORTANT, because the registration of the IBM 7845 with the 5ESS MUST occur before the Ascend P50.
: Even if you want to use both B channels for data simultaneously, you : won't have to touch the 7845. I don't know why it works, but : at Ascend they told me if I have 2 SPIDs I would have to set the : 7845 as Multi-P and put in both SPIDS to get both B channels to work. : That was not only not true, but nothing worked if I did that.
: Once I figured out the above, with hints (some correct) from IBM (Hi Chuck) : Ascend (Hi Matt), Pac Bell (Hi Joyce) and Internex (Hi Randy), I didn't : have to resort to the following two measures, which I employed : several times during learning:
: A) When re-programming the Ascend, power cycle it once if : it doesn't appear to change switching modes viz-a-viz : it's Switch Type status window. : B) If Everything looks good but you can't PING out - i.e. no : dial, call the Ascend number from a differet : line to wake it up - you should see it's B1 channel : status change from - to *.
: Oh, while I can't seem to get the Ascend to automatically increase : bandwidth yet, I can force is by asking it to originate calls : on both B channels. (I must say, the documentation for both the Ascend : and IBM units is - well I don't want to start anything.)

Added by Hubert Daugherty The above information helped me get this working. I want to thank Michael for work he did in figuring this out. |
