CyberWorks May Buy HKT through Share Swap

According to a market source, the parent company of Pacific Century CyberWorks (1186) is discussing a co-operation plan with Singapore Telecommunications. The partners will buy a stake in Cable & Wireless HKT (0008) but through a share swap in order to reduce political sensitivity.

CyberWorks is going to have a meeting with securities analysts after the market close today, the source said.

C&W Plc Rises 10pc in London

The European markets traded in different directions. The London FTSE-100 fell 0.4 per cent to 6,256. Cable & Wireless Plc, however, rallied more than 10 per cent against the market decline. Though Cheung Kong (0001) and Hutchison Whampoa (0013) had said that they do not intend to buy a stake in Cable & Wireless HKT (0008), investors still hope that Pacific Century CyberWorks (1186) will acquire an interest in telecommunications companies.
