The problem is that the world can do virtually nothing about Putin's Russia. His energy reserves give Russia enormous power and leverage in a world that has few if any alternative sources for gas and oil. The other western nations can't afford to bounce Russia out of all the multilateral bodies it has joined since the fall of communism.

Future US presidents may take a tougher rhetorical line against Russian misbehavior. But it's clear to me that Putin mapped out a direction several years ago, and US sentiments won't matter either way. We missed the window to weave Russia further into the western fabric a while back.
