There's a couple of other reasons.

Analysts at the conference call noticed that Wind River had to dip into the deferred revenue account for a couple of million dollars to make their numbers last quarter. Obviously, RadiSys isn't the only embedded systems company to feel the effects of the Asian crisis. In addition, I2O is like every other non-profit org established by Intel (AGP, USB, 1394, Device Bay, Fiber Channel) and is slow getting established. Investors need to set more realistic expectations of how long it takes to make revolutionary changes.

The most interesting threat to Wind River was completely ignored by this thread. Richard Smith of Phar-Lap posted a story about an upcoming version of WinNT for embedded systems. It will be slimmed down by using a subset of the APIs. The biggest objection to NT up until now in embedded systems has been the large footprint, but that objection will be gone when the product is released. You can expect a further decline when reporters explain at release time whose ox is being gored.

Greg M. posted a count of want ads that showed WinCe is now third behind VxWorks and pSOS. It probably was much further down the list a year ago. It will be interesting to see an updated list of results in 6 months. Will it still be third? Investors who sent Puma Technology through the roof on the Blue Tooth announcement last week seem to think it will rise even further.
