If the candidate really did have nothing to do with it than I don't see why he should be required to drop out of the race but it will probably hurt him anyway. The fact that Nguyen is himself an immigrant might reduce the harm but there will be some harm.

Illegal immigrants voting is a problem, but that doesn't mean people should be told they can't vote if they are naturalized immigrants.

If they can find out who sent the letter they should of course be fired from the campaign, and they might even be able to be prosecuted. (Would there actions constitute voting fraud, or some other crime? I'm not sure.)

This is likely to hurt Nguyen, if whoever sent out the letter really does support Nguyen than they are a fool. It could even have been done by a supporter of his opposition, who wanted to sabotage Nguyen's campaign but I haven't seen a shred of evidence to suggest that, just the thought "they couldn't be that stupid could they? But then I should remember the rule that its not safe to attribute anything to a conspiracy if mere incompetence is enough to explain it. I suppose it might be more likely that whoever is behind this really is a fool.

County Republican Chairman Scott Baugh said that after speaking with state investigators and the company that distributed the mailer, he believes Nguyen had direct knowledge of the "obnoxious and reprehensible" letter. He said the party's executive committee voted unanimously to urge Nguyen to drop out of the race against Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez.

"I learned information that allows me to draw the conclusion that not only was Mr. Nguyen's campaign involved in this, but that Mr. Nguyen was personally involved in expediting the mailer," Baugh said in a telephone interview.

If Nguyen is behind this he should drop out of the race. If Nguyen did it and doesn't drop out and Baugh has solid evidence, than he should make the evidence available to election officials and if no crime can be charged than he should make it available to the public.
