Mark and John, I am under the same impression... Phoenix does not supply any BIOSs for CPQ's Commercial Div. It is my understanding that the Commercial Div. is where DEC's PC business was absorbed. That is why the acquisition of DEC, by CPQ, was so unfortunate, and costly, for PTEC. DEC's PCs previously used the Phoenix BIOS.
It is very interesting to note that the PC price wars, and the movement to the sub-$1,000 PC market, that the industry has been experiencing over the last year or so, is probably the creation of CPQ. CPQ's willingness to incorporate AMD chips into their low-end PCs appears to have been disruptive to their earlier business model, when they were using Intel chips exclusively. This is the second time CPQ has attempted to incorporate more, and cheaper, AMD chips into their product line. When they last attempted to do the same, 4 or 5 years ago, it also resulted in their stock price tanking. Regards, Jules |
