A small reduction in liberty might be justified because of a large public benefit, but the reduction in liberty would still itself be a bad thing, even if its acceptable in exchange for some much larger benefit.

OTOH there are always people out there who are going to find a much larger benefit to society from just about anything, as long as it benefits them or their pet cause, so it pays to be very careful when making such trade offs.
