Because of overt discrimination. True, France has a strong welfare system but Arabs were facing discrimination when it came to housing and jobs.

You see they too would prefer working rather than relying on the State for support.

Here's the bottom line. We're a nation of immigrants. 95% of immigrants (legal or "undocumented") arrive here and start off either poor or in the lower-middle class. The effect of that on the average life expectancy should be obvious.

You don't think it has anything to do with substantive stress.
