Yes, lot's of people have stated that the Iranian people are actually craving Western standards of government, but they are overpowered by the Mullahs in power. Sad but true.

The Mullahs are a conservative lot no question but then they are also encouraging the education of the population including women. Iran is turning out more women doctors and lawyers than any other ME country. And aside from Turkey, no other Muslim country is so proactive education. The Mullahs are not my favorite people but I think American propangandists have maligned their image making them worse than they really are. For an example, I have heard it said over and over that Iran like the Palestinians send in their 14 year old boys to fight in their wars because they don't care about their children. That's not true. From where that misrepresentation comes is during the Iranian/Iraqi war during the 1980s. Iraq's army was superior to Iran's and the casualty count was much higher for Iran. Eventually, they ran out of able bodied men and were on the verge of losing. Its then they sent in 14 year olds to fight. I believe it from there the misrepresentation started.

I don't know if you've seen the slide show of Teheran that was posted by Chris; its worth viewing:
