I'm no expert, but I think self flagellating Shias are the norm. If you're going to label them extremists you just labelled most of the members of that version of Islam.

I don't think all Shia self flagellate, and even if they all do, I think Shia only make 10% of the Muslim population. Not sure about that 10%.....typing from memory......but they definitely are a small minority.
