Ha !! those investors with weak heart are just too nervous, and those sold in the after hour trading may have just miscalculated the current situation !!!! After the FOF, those clowns in the DOJ had claimed their victory in public, and they have their faces . Bill Gate said we have tried to settle this case in the very begining and still open the door for settlement, but we will also fight the case to the end ( if a settlement can not be reached). The DOJ said it is not mature to talk about remedy at this stage .
Going into 2000, the campaign of presidential election will go full speed, and it is not good to have this anti consumer and competition
DOJ case continue , it will work against the democratic candidate big time and who had the political power now, did your hear the Republican senates started to talk about the FOF in public after the release, so , who want this unwelcomed case to be settled the most for political reason ? It is your guess, and the DOJ is not sure they can win in the appeal based on the previous experience. Besides, it will be a completely new administration in year 2001, and the thinking about anti trust will be different than the currewnt one.
For Microsoft, the longer the case drags the lower the morality of its
employee will be and it is not good for a Hi Tech company, and Microsoft will also face the uncertainity of lose in the appeal court.
So, to settle at this point is good for everyone.

As to the break up, Microsoft had already broken up internally , and
it may break up by itself before the ruling of the appeal court. It is to Microsoft's benefit to break up , as a company grows up to a certain level, it is hard to manage, break up is the solution. So, break up by the DOJ or by Microsoft itself is not a issue, if DOJ does not break Microsoft, Microsoft will break up itself in the future, just look at its new organization chart , you will know
