The June issue of Byte magazine has an excellent article on Merced technology. Byte reports that the Alpha should be twice as fast in integer and floating point performance than the Merced when the Merced debuts. The next generation Merced that HP is almost exclusively designing should be about twice as fast as the first generation Merced, but improvements to the Alpha should keep it in the performance lead. Byte doesn't expect the promise of Merced technology to really hit stride until about 2003. They also point out that the performance of Merced is going to depend heavily on some very tricky and hard to implement new compilers. Bugs in these compilers could cause a Merced nightmare. So, perhaps AMD and Cyrix can indeed compete with Intel by adopting some of the technology in the Alpha.
