The reason that I do is because it is a better estimate of the actual revenue stream to Microsoft. Very little Windows (maybe only 10%) is sold as packages. The remainder is already on the machines when they are bought, or is sold as site licenses, or as part of a bundle (for example, I get mine because I have a MSDN Level II subscription at home for game development. The Level II subscription contains all the current OS related stuff, so I have a choice of DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, WFW, Win 95, NT 3.51, or NT 4.0). Further, if I have a desktop and a portable, if I read the license right, I can use the one MSDN subscription for both machines. Incidentally, Level II is only a $300 premium per year over the Level I.
