Consider the points below and tell me if you still think ASP and COM are a sure fire monopoly:

Siddarta,

I never said ASP/COM is going to give MS a sure fire monopoly. (OK, may be I implied it)

What I should have said is that ASP/COM, (which has had an impressive penetration into what was almost 100% Unix only one year ago) together with Gates's many times demonstrated ruthlessness, is going to give MS a good shot to server programming development.

1. Apache is the most popular web server. In the protocols space, the dominant wins. And wins for SURE if it is free.
<<<<<<

Many programmers cannot/willnot develop for Unix. Windows NT may not be as reliable as Unix, but lets you use the tools you are familiar with. (But I agree that Apache should dominate until Gates comes out with something)

I cannot argue with points 2) and 3)

>>>>>>>
4. The infrastructure software for Internet businesses will come from independent software vendors.
5. COM+MTS have competitors such as CORBA, DCE, etc.
6. Microsoft is just another player in the server operating system space.
<<<<<<<

This is the same situation we had in Utilities before Windows95 or in Major Applications before Office, or in programming tools before VisualBasic, VisualC++, etc. It never stopped MS before.

Anyway. I do not claim to be able to see the future. We'll have to play it by ear as it unfolds. :>

Take care,

theRedDog.
