Andy - Re: " intel embedded system solution?..."
Their i960 seems to be holding its own these days. The high speed version has been adopted as a high speed controller for NICs (network interface cards) giving very fast transfer speeds without the host CPU being involved.
Two companies - HDS and Sun River (they have a new name but I forget it) have actually announced NCs (Network Computers) that use the i960.
So far, so good.
As far as Unix file servers, the PENTIUM PRO, in multiple (x2, x4) configurations has been WIDELY adopted for Server machines and announced by nearly everybody in the business - DEC, Compaq, Amdahl, Sequent, Dell, Gateway, ALR, Netframe, Tricord, etc.
Although SUN is, and will continue to be, very strong in this area, I'd expect that the server "landscape" will be have Intel Inside written all over it by Christmas 1997.
This should be a Christmas gift for all Intel shareholders.
