I think 6 mile wireless would be an important part of the last mile problem, but I don't think it is the solution. There is only so much wireless bandwidth to go around and if 40% or so of the houses were connected there would be a lot of "all circuits busy" type of errors. Still when cable, and DSL are not available wireless is a reasonable option (as is terrabeam's laser point to point connections). Ultimately fiber will probably run right up to the curb of most urban buildings, but there will be a lot of interim solutions before that is finished.
