because so much else also happened during the period from then to now,but that seems to correlate fairly well with beginning of the deterioration of American education.

Does you feel this deterioration starting in the 50s applies to education across the board? This seems a little hard to believe... example what about black kids in the south? Their education was actually better prior to civil rights than now? Or mathematics instruction for women, etc.
