Delphi to Supply Diesel Common Rail System to South Korean OEM

TROY, Mich., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Corporation (NYSE: DPH) today announced a multi-year agreement totaling U.S. $383 million to supply its Multec(TM) 1600 diesel common rail (DCR) system to South Korean original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Ssangyong Motor Co. Delphi's Multec(TM) 1600 DCR application will be used on Ssangyong's 2.0- and 2.7-liter engines in 2003.

Delphi's Multec(TM) 1600 DCR system has been designed to meet future stringent emissions requirements around the globe, as well as provide solutions to increasing demands for improvements in fuel economy. The modular system can also be adapted for different engines. The technology used in Delphi's Multec(TM) 1600 common rail system is based on solenoid injectors with balanced valve and feedback control strategies.
"Combined with the location of the solenoid close to the needle, this provides extremely fast actuation and precise metering, even in high-pressure applications of up to 1600 bar," said Dominique Chauvin, managing director, Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems, Europe. "The fast, ultra compact solenoid requires less energy than other systems currently in production and operates at battery voltage, allowing for a simpler, more cost-effective electronic design."
Delphi has achieved great success in the diesel injection systems market since the launch of its diesel common rail in 2000. Delphi has manufactured more than one million diesel common rail systems to date, with booked business predicted to exceed more than 2.5 million systems per year by 2006.
Delphi employs approximately 4,200 permanent employees in Korea with its six joint ventures and one wholly-owned operation. The six joint ventures include: Korea Delphi Automotive Components Co., Ltd. (KDAC), Shin Sung Packard Co., Ltd. (SSP), KDS Co., Ltd., Delkor Corp., Daesung Electric Co., Ltd., and Delphi Diesel Systems Korea Ltd.
Since its launch in Korea, Delphi is committed to meeting the requirements of Korean OEMs for localized components, technology leadership, systems support, and a global support network to assist customers in their global expansion. Work is under way to develop Korean joint ventures to become full systems suppliers with local systems development capability in key globally competitive areas.
