NEW YORK, Oct 25 (Reuter) - Microsoft Corp is gathering up^M its industry allies to propose a simpler, less expensive^M personal computer in order to counter a threat from a new kind^M of network computer, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.^M <p> The newspaper quoted people familiar with the matter as^M saying Microsoft had been defining its proposed computer -- and^M even its name -- this week.^M <p> The company was expected to present its proposal on Monday^M at a meeting of World Wide Web developers that it was hosting in^M San Jose, Calif, it said.^M <p> The newspaper said some of the initiative's supporters^M included <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/news/intc.html">Intel Corp</a> , <a hre f="http://biz.yahoo.com/news/hwp.html">Hewlett-Packard Co</a> , <a href="http:/ /biz.yahoo.com/news/cpq.html">Compaq Computer Corp</a> , <a href="http://biz.ya hoo.com/news/dell.html">Dell Computer Corp</a> and other^M makers of personal computers that use Microsoft's Windows^M operating system and Intel microchips.^M <p> The new network computers don't have a disk drive and^M retrieve their software from the Internet and other computer^M networks, it said.
